The biggest damage was done by a company with a reputation for cutting corners. They damaged an entire industry. I know you're not absolving BP of their responsibility but so long as there is piss poor management, there's going to be regulation created to counter it. To expect otherwise is simply unrealistic. To expect that there be an absence of political opportunism is unrealistic.

I'm not saying that Brazil hasn't seemingly gone nuts on this thing - it appears that it has, but to keep taking potshots at how BP was treated over Macondo is silly. It wasn't like someone dumped a quart of used 30wt over the side.
Given how Brazil is handling things, can you imagine what they would've done to BP if Macondo had been in their back yard?
