I also met a gentlemen who asserted his Thai wife had access to the upper crust of Thai society..

The one thing he told me that I found most interesting is that, apparently, the royal family owns approximately 30% of all the total land in Thailand outright, especially Pattaya, and Phuket areas.

Other sources cite that the they, as royals, technically own all the land (which I guess they do, if they want to assert their rights).

I like Samui as well, and there's a lot to be said of Kho Tao as well, although much smaller. I'm just not sure I'd want to try and buy property there when I don't own the underlying land.

I'd just consider it a lease, and therefore, disposable.. Which means I wouldn't want to spend more than I needed to..

And that's a valid point about the potential for political upheaval there, especially when the King dies. I expected it last May when it appeared the King was on death's door.

I asked an American who lives in Thailand his take on buying property there. He loves the country but said he bought knowing the risk that one day he might have to leave it all behind. Lives outside of Bangkok. Keeps a getaway suitcase packed and ready to go in case things get hairy.
