My paternal grandmother loved to get her hands in the dirt. She told me that one day when we stopped by a house she rented to some folks with the stipulation she could grow a garden in the back yard. The renters were allowed to take vegetables for their meals as long as they left 1/2 for her. I'll never forget stopping by and harvesting carrots, beets, spinach and lettuce. We'd take it to grandmother's house, wash it up and before I knew it dinner was served. She used to make her noodles from scratch and had one of those red handled pasta wheels. I have it now and it is close by in a hutch I have in the kitchen. Every time I use something one of my ancestors owned I feel like something is being passed on.

ah, land ownership meant everything to Europeans, for few owned the land

they told me many stories of the 'old county' - how they made their bricks with mud and straw, worked the vineyards, village life

it's funny, when I was young I thought they were out of step with the times - saying, Grams that's old country stuff, it's different in now in America - as I've aged, they were right about so many things, most things

my poppa was a first generation immigrant.....germany....WWII vet (contemplate THAT)

he didn't make it west, but bought a fair amount of land in the midwest....developed a nursery....where i got my love of all things green....he loved it here and unashamedly had a huge flag pole in the front yard to fly the flag for july 4th, memorial day, veterans day, etc.....some day i want to get back to the fatherland and see if there are any remaining relatives (he was an only child)....did you know you can get euro citizenship if your parents or grandparents emigrated from there??
