Ford wasn't headed toward any sort of a great presidency, but he did himself in by pardoning Nixon. He was a decent man, and sane.

Completely agree. Just pointing out that, with the possible exception of the poppy Bush years (and I don't really see them that way), it was the last time you could seriously make the case for a moderate Republican as the presidential candidate of the party. I've heard the case made for Bob Dole but I don't buy it. You may also recall that Dole was Ford's vp candidate and was meant to be Ford's token right winger on the ticket.
