Well actually there are a great many followers of Jesus who are very much like him, but if one is not active in religious circles one is not likely to be aware of that. Some of the most charitable, liberal, progressive people I know are Southern Baptists. Very well educated, as well, I might add. Go figure. Those who pander to naive churchgoers are also pandering to a much broader swath of the populace, as a colleague of mine used to say "The great unwashed." Nowadays most people in the U. S. are at least, washed, thanks to indoor plumbing, but education is the key, be they churchgoers or atheists.
