Europe is one drag and then China is becoming another. The ECRI Weekly Leading Index is at -8.2% and deteriorating. This tells us that rough waters are directly ahead. The US cannot continue to recover in the face of a global downturn. China is now usually a leading indicator for the US, since China manufactures so many of our goods. So if China is slowing down, then we know we're next.

U.S. chemical makers such as DuPont Co. and Dow Chemical Co. probably will report fourth-quarter earnings that fell from the prior quarter and from the year-earlier period.

On Friday, EVP Thomas Connelly filed SEC Form 4 indicating that he exercised DD options and sold the resulting 54,648 shares for $2.6 million, under a 10b5-1 plan. Overall, insiders sold a total of 535,710 shares in the past year. DD trades at 11-12 forward P/E and 3.9 P/B compared to averages of 10.8 and 2.6 for the diversified chemicals group.
