No, this is actually fairly accepted. Before Egypt was unified the Upper Kingdom was a race of lighter color, but the Lower Kingdom was black, maybe not as black as nubians but black. If you look at the statues of many of the early Pharaoh's they exibit many negro features. Many of the surviving painted statues, and paintings show Egyptians with brown skin; some lighter than others, but never white.

Here are some wall paintings. They obviously were not white.
