To David Brooks thesis on liberals. Liberals are increasing worldwide, just not in the US. Couple of reasons 1) The right wing has been hammering government since Raygun said: "government is the problem, not the solution". Point: "we are the government in a democracy, so it is a stupid thing to say. We are the problem? is how that translates in a social equation. 2) Liberal ideas conflict with religious ideas. 3) Many people who do not understand liberals, like the old 60's liberal hippie, just don't like them because they have them charicatured in their mind and have no understanding of thier philosophy or world. 4) Europe is much more advanced than we are becasue they have so much cultural diffussion. Our ocutnry has been captrued plitically by the far right evangelical Christian who wants us to live in the 1300's into perpetuity. And that has been a huge drag on the evolution of our democcracy for example universal health care, free educationa nd stem cell research.
