I tried to get copies of WII commendations an uncle received. Was told they'd been lost, with much else, in a '72(?) fire in a DoD facility.

Oh dear....you have been bitten by the genealogy bug....You just explained why I have worked on family lines for nearly 40 years now...ESPECIALLY since the Internet age....there is SO much info about the times, and the places where they lived, that it truly is fascinating!

I couldn't believe that you just mentioned Sackett's Harbor!! (It used to be spelled with two "t"s)....I mentioned I am giving a program on the War of 1812 in Feb at our State Board meeting...with ladies coming from all over the State. There is so much info available, that the problem I have is it has to be condensed down so far because of time consideration that it can only be an overview...I will be speaking a bit about Sackett's Harbor, NY because it was a small, but very important part of the war, AND my Lt Joel Brigham was part of that battle. He also was invited to be a participant on the Courts Martial Board in 1814.

Did your folks come from Dunkirk or that area ?

Brigham's family came from MA to the eastern part of NY (Augusta) then over to the Dunkirk area....When you look at what was NOT there in those early years you will be amazed. It was the "West" in those days...and mostly forest lands with what became great farming lands inbetween...

From Dunkirk, my guy and his family traveled (had to be by buggy or just horses) to eventually Medina Co, Ohio. He died in OH in 1833.....

Great idea to use those forms from the DAR (if anyone wants more just go to the dar.org site, and look under Membership and or Genealogy....there are downloadable forms that will help keep you on track. It is so typical of all of us to get diverted on all the sidebar events of the day, BUT I've found that is the really exciting part! If people love History, they will Love Family History Search!

PS...Its still snowing as I speak...and is sticking ...flakes are looking more like serious flakes now...

Looked to see how far Augusta NY was from Dunkirk NY...today as the crow flies, it's about 240ish miles....
Hard to do in the early 1800's with no railroads, roads, etc...just some Indian trails...and lots of forest..

While looking for Dunkirk History, I see all the NY cities, towns, villages, etc...drives me nuts, but there are lots of sources for this History. However I did find something for me ....another of my ancestors, also a Rev War and 1812 soldier....was also a founder in 1809 of this church...AMAZING....I didn't know...it's another find on this snowy day!
