We have a deficit problem because we import more goods from other countries than we sell back to them and we have to borrow money to make up the difference. Exporting more goods, in this case fuel, will reduce the amount we have to borrow and strengthen the dollar and, thus, help us balance our budget as a strong dollar will cause our cost of borrowing to go down.

If oil from the Mid-east is unavailable (were you here during the gas crisis of 1978?) due to either war or cartel politics having an additional pipeline of plentiful upgraded tar stuff (its diluted in the pipeline) will be a real plus.

The "carbon storm" argument I'm not up on enough to comment, but probably think it is based on the work of the anti-global warming science crowd for which their is not enough data yet present to rely on. I think methane is the more prominent danger.

I think what you think is patronizing is just the generation gap speaking. When you get to be certain number of years one think's he or she has heard it all before.

The way this works is that the young and the reckless are supposed to tell their elders they've clucked up the planet and that they, the next generation, know best and are going to do better. My hat is off to you. I hope you succeed.

We may have not done the best we could and had to compromise here and there in order to get on with our lives. Such is life.
