The Gingrich statement you quoted had me scratching my head. I couldn't discern whether he was referring to himself as having undergone 'personal pain' (via the divorce, etc.), or whether he was referring to his ex-wife, or the results of their relationship in general.

If he was referring to himself, that was quite a deflection, and an unattractive one at that. From what I understand, he was in large part to blame for the dissolution of that marriage, and I don't waste my sympathies on people whose pain is self-inflicted.

With that said, I still have not made my mind up (in spite of the fact that I consider myself to be well-informed) as to whether he should be the nominee. My far-and-away favorite candidate is Rick Santorum. My husband and I have followed his career -- both in government and in the private sector -- for nearly twenty years, and I believe he has at least the potential to be another Reagan (something I never thought I'd say about another politician). But I don't believe Rick has a prayer of winning the nomination -- which is, if nothing else, a sad commentary on America 2012.

Of the remaining candidates, I believe Newt is the only one who stands a chance of defeating Obama. O's campaign will play on the ignorance and apathy of much of the voting public, and the mainstream media will be (has been) in his corner from day one. And voter fraud (perpetrated by ACORN and their ilk) will be mind-boggling. So, as I see it, the republican nominee's greatest chance of winning will be via the debates. And Newt will be the best debater, hands down. He will chew Obama up and spit him out, and then all we have to hope is that the mainstream media aren't successful in convincing the viewers that they saw and heard something other than what they actually saw and heard (mind you, they'll do their best).
