I grew up in a big city where drug dealers bought treats for the local kids, in hopes of creating loyalty. In my corporate life working for a gigantic "telecom," the same hidden quid pro quo principle was used in conspicuous "donations" and philanthropy. It makes business sense, even if it is manipulative. I learned that its not the act itself, its the context of giving and the quid pro quos; I judge these publicly altruistic things as individual cases. Most times giving from the heart as Jesus would advocate is the province of anonymous individuals (some who are religious, some not) not large enterprises including powerful religious enterprise who have plenty of marketing PR soldiers in their centers of power. The LDS Church is well known for this and openly buys print, TV and radio advertising; the Vatican is more shadowy but, well, DOH!! Scientology is another who is conscious of "brand." They all try to associate with socially positive acts that fog their true goals which include broadening fear of free inquiry, and and ultimately to grow market share. Along with your list of the good things that Religions have 'accomplished," many great discoveries in science have saved lives, based on biology (built on evolution facts) and other sciences which are in unavoidable conflict with religious baloney (I think you would call it "Truth.") Science has made many purposeful transparent mistakes as the method is dynamic and self correcting going forward. Religion cannot say the same, that's why its called "faith"; and that is why we need good fences to be tolerant neighbors. And we agree to disagree and keep the discussion civil.
