Grant was a great general. I personally discount the "stories". Grant used mobility and daring to capture Vicksburg. He used brute force to defeat Lee - the only way to do it.

Grant was what was necessary to win and he deserves the admiration of the nation.

PS: I am a huge fan of Robert E Lee - but the nation would have best served had his army been destroyed at Antietam.

PSS: If anyone is not aware of the scope of the Battle of Antietam - I recommend the study. Lee was a bold gambler and won the game of bluff - even if history says the Union won at Antietam.

According to Gingrich in the book "Grant Comes East" Grant swore off the bottle until the war was won. I don't know if that is true, but either way he was a great general.
