Lee destroyed his cause at Gettysburg. "It's all my fault, boys. It's all my fault."

the scope of the Battle of Antietam

I spent 2 days at Antietam and still didn't fully grasp the scope of that battle. Absolutely brutal and unimaginable what happened there.

Grant and Lee were butchers. They used Napoleonic tactics to fight the Civil War. A whole new generation of weapons had made that kind of warfare butchery.

today and in the 20th century in the usa we all hear what a great president and hero lincoln was, and it is certainly true. however in the 19th century u.s. grant was the hero of the country. he won the war, and that is what people loved about him.

it is interesting that the last command robert e. lee had with the us army was at fort mason, now mason, texas. he traveled from ft. mason to washington to get the offer to take command of the us army for lincoln in the likely civil war.
