Would you believe a cry is going up that a memory shortage is coming. Yep, in an industry awash in commodity memory, vendors are warning PC makers of a possible shortage of high-speed synchronous DRAM through most of next year, Andrew MacLellan reports in EBN.
The problem: rigorous new test requirements for a spec called PC100, created by Intel to provide a faster bus connection between main memory and system logic. Vendors predict few factories will be ready next year with enough output to handle the demand. "Most PC companies expect a shortage of parts . . . probably into the third quarter," says VP Mark Ellsberry of Hyundai. "I think . . . we'll go through a period of shortage, where the shortage is not driven by a lack of wafer capacity but by an inability to test," adds Credence CEO Bill Bottoms.
