but, remember they can't layoff people with prodcutivity technologies since to lay off people is to lose face.

I wonder how much of it is properly balancing team/individual concerns.

I think both our cultures are "out-of-kilter" in some regards.
Perhaps workers aren't as "expendable" as we think they are and shouldn't be retained at any cost either (Japan). Work, as well as money, is a hard task-master, though.

U.S. gvnmt is free-spending and undisciplined. This may produce more problems for us in the long-run than all the right JIT, TQM, great IT, whatever can solve. The problems in Asia aren't simply due to it's poor competition in the technical sectors. It ain't that simple!!

Japan may have it's share of problems, but they've made better cars than the U.S. for years. I'm glad I own 2 Japanese cars. (I know -- they may have been made here -- but the technology and design are Japanese.)

Sorry, I probably should have posted this to steve. Glad I live here, but I get tired of hearing the strong nationalistic views of some.
