Because the major universities all respect him and he can work anywhere, MIT, anywhere, he has a nobel prize and he is the 4th most referenced economist in the world. As well, Stiglitz and most other top economists respect his work and put forth the same theories. Stiglitz is the most referenced economist in the world and also a nobel prize winner. In science, confirmation by other great scientists is how scientists gage who knows the truth. When Einstein put forth his theory of relativity it was the word of half a dozen of the top physicist's in the world like Max Planck, Max Born and others that convinced the world it was correct. In fact only about half a dozen people at first could even understand what he was saying. The secret to wisdom is finding the best and the brightest and learning from them. how do you know who the best and brightest is? do you take someone else's word for that also? You can get an idea by what teh other great minds respect. When Nietzche read Doestevsky he said tears came to his eyes as he had found a brother. Lot so them are known well, like Plato, Einstein, Bertrand Russell, Whitehead, Mark Twain and Will Rogers-lol, today Steven Pinker. One just has to work on it. Our job is to make sure our mentors know what they are talking about. how will you know? By seeing what other great minds think. PS. everything anyone 'knows' has to be figured out for himself or he only knows what someone else says he knows..
