The bottom line is that welfare doesn't reduce poverty, it increases it.

The church where my parents were married and where I grew up was close to the railroad, so sometimes transients would come by. I think some of them got a small handout, but really know nothing more about that era.

Recently, the same church decided to turn the chapel my parents were married into a sort of soup kitchen and pretty much opened the doors. I think they had to close that down because the clientele abused it and it became a magnet for undesirable behavior.

PLUS the churches of all kinds cater to the poor..... There are many more scholarships for the poor than there are for kids of middle income people.....

Well I had to give you a rec for that because we should all work hard and lift ourselves out of poverty or being poor or working at minimum wage jobs....I see Romney said something about that today, but I haven't read exactly what he said yet.........and making sure we have good credit and pay our bills so that some day we too can afford and be approved to buy a home. Buying our first home was a huge step up for us, but it wasn't easy. We were lucky to have a boss who loved our work and was willing to loan us $2000.00 of the $5000.00 we needed for our down payment. So we got the loan, and we ended up paying him back within 8 months. He loaned us that money because he knew we were hard workers and trustworthy and we proved we were. Romney said something to the effect that if there is something broken within the welfare system that needs his attention then he'd repair or fix it (can't remember his exact words?) and I'm thinking come on Mitt...............we need bold solutions for getting more people out of poverty and living the American dream, and because I believe in it so much, and that I didn't hear him say that is very disappointing to me.
