<<societies we're speaking of are hardly enlightened.

You cannot take your experiences in your life, in our society and wontonly apply that to other countries and societies..... That's a form of presentism..... After all, looking at some of these 3rd world countries is just like looking back in time>>

Enlightened, China is plenty enlightened. As are Asians. They are ahead of us in computers and philosophy and 50% of the incoming freshman class at UC Berkely is Asian every year because they value education so much. Dr Chu said when he went to China he was greeted like a rock star and over here no one even knew who he was.

We are lagging almost every western democracy because the right wing is so anti intellectual and wants us to go back to the 1800's and teach creationism in school and are even challenging contraception--good lord!

Bush wouldn't even allow stem cell research. We are the only western democracy without universal health care, the most expensive eucation and we have the greatest income inequality and you are just fine with that.

Better than fine, you are an advocate for that primitive thinking.
