No Koan, the problem is that you are wrong. Not wrong about yourself, or that you are a liberal, but wrong about a long complex history of liberalism.

How can you propose to tell us who we are?

No "we" here, I'm talking to you. And I'm not telling you who you are. You know who you are far better than I do, or every could. But you are not the sum total of liberalism, or apparently even very knowledgeable about its philosophical history.

"Favorable to progress or reform." --- that pretty much says it all.

If that says it all, than many conservatives, and most libertarians are "liberal", and many who call themselves liberal are not. (For examples see how many "liberals" would fight entitlement reform, or school choice).
