<<<<<<There are clearly other reasons for their success other than providing free education>>>>

Yup! Finland is even better. Pay less and get more. Something is working for them and every time I tell that to an educator they seem to go ballistic. CLEARLY, no child left behind didn't work either. Time to get the feds out of education - especially at the funding end.

[edit] This is a relatively new position for me. I've always been uncomfortable with the feds telling me how to teach my kids, but thought some of the backward states down south could use a little progressive thinking.

Yes, so what is your point? Every single country that puts huge resources into education rises to the top.

Had Bush used the 5 trillion he blew on those two stupid wars, and tax breaks for the rich, for education, we would be the star of the world today.

<<A bit. They not only pay people to go to school, but any person can get a PHD for free and take as long as they want."

They don't pay for kids that go to the Folkeskole or elementery schools, but iti is free. Yet our schools don't touch theirs, even though ours are free.

There are clearly other reasons for their success other than providing free education.
Did you know that no child has to go to public schools and it is left entirely to the parents to decide which school, public or private a child attends, and if they attend a private school they are given a voucher.

Did you know that?
