See where this is leading with the Moromons ? And not just with this fictional "Moroni" a name that Smith borrows from some Pirate Story of Captain Kidd that would have been a prominent at the time . This Moroni who lives supposedly some 600bc conveniently returns as an Angel to now reveal golden tablets buried just right in the next county by a group of Israelites that sailed to the Americas carrying this first one true written word of "God" , where they were buried . Of course this golden tablet is never produced but witnesses sign affidavits of seeing them close neighbors to our "prophet" who translates these texts written in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs somehow miraculously into perfect Kings English .lol

In the rise of the Moromons all this legend surrounding the discovery of these sacred "scriptures" mirrors in almost an exact way tribes of Israel & rise of the Old Testament with the similar story of the Ark of the Covenant . Just with the Bible there was of course more time to pick & choose plagiarize , rewrite & massage the passages thru time . The Jews were known as the people of the book , well one would expect any writers of fiction to become better at their craft with all the advantages of hindsight . . Later you see the Christians just add on the new sets of stories which fit into the theme perfectly , with big doses of already present Greek philisophical metaphysical ontolgy and cosmology .

When roman General Pompeii enters Jerusalem in 70BC and demands to be allowed to see the inner sanctorum "Holi of Holies" of the Jewish Temple he finds nothing inside but an empty room . No Covenant , no Ark , nothing and here Pompeii states he cannot understand what all the fuss was about . Of course no one but the High priests were ever allowed to see that room inside the Jerusalem Temple it was always the treasure room where all the real action was .

So while young Joseph Smith is growing up in the middle of the largest protestant revival movement in the US in 1820

" The Second Awakening " ....here we find whole towns erupting in rapture freshly returning from baptisms down by the river in upstate New York, people are seeing Angels behind every tree & imbued with the "spirit of the Holy Ghost" everywhere you look . For who would want to be left out of this kind of impending Holy return of the Christ and we're all going to see God ?

Would this be any different than what was happening over by the river Jordan some 2000yrs ago ?
I think not ...

It's quite a powerful idea & promise this idea of being "reborn" and who wouldn't be drawn to the concept of rebirth & second chances ?? Just add eternal life in heaven & you could even sell that to the fish eaters in the arctic or the aborigines in Australia , or so was the beautiful plan . But more to do with couching the hidden secrets around ideas that have universal appeal , like abundance , security , fellowship & fruits of labors , longevity , freedom from sickness and reward of appearing saintly in the eyes of others .

Its not a new idea of course always will be another Joseph Smith , John the Baptist or Jesus , they await the latest one in Iran the Jews , one only guesses are still waiting . Seems there is a competition between the Israeli rapturists & the Iranian rapturists for who's messiah will come first now .

The Indians just don't care
