Nixon got 60.7% of the vote in 1972. Nixon had his problems, and I certainly hated him in 1972., the first election I voted in. But things have gotten so much worse since then. I mean, Watergate was, actually, a third rate burglary compared to the crap being shoved down our throats in the Citizens United era. Nixon ranted about the liberal press like conservatives have forever, but there was no Fox News, and I don't think he talked about eliminating the fairness doctrine. Hell, who knows what Murdoch and Ailes do at Fox News, Murdoch's crew had no compunction about wiretapping in genteel England, and I can't quite see Ailes as more scrupulous than the English tabloid types. And don't get me started on the Supreme Court. Nixon was a human being. Like all human beings, he did some good things and some bad things. Maybe he was a head case, and maybe he would be much worse if he was born 40 years later and was running for president now. But hating him puts us in the in something close to the same place as the reflexive Obama haters elsewhere on SI. Well, maybe not exactly, since as near as I can except for a select few they deny actually hating Obama, but it's sort of a slippery slope. I don't understand American conservatives. I have no clue how anybody can support the Republican party in its current incarnation, but something around half the voters in the US do, and we have to live with that somehow. I have no idea what the right thing to do is, but rationally, hating right back at them just doesn't seem the right thing to do.
