Some anecdotal evidence - a couple of people have told me that traffic on the Bay Bridge (San Francisco) seems lighter than usual this last month.

There is a fourth explanation.

Unemployment is still a lot higher than the government figures show (which most people already know). This means that there is simply not the volume of commuter traffic that there was before 2008.

some weeks ago we were having a discussion about the more than curious, severe drop off (cliff dive) in gasoline refinery output in the last two months of 2011. on kudlow's show last week addison armstrong said he was seeing both government data and and mastercard gas station swipe data showing americans were using just 9 million gallons of gasoline per day. he took this as a very scary number relative to economic activity in the usa. this is just fyi, because i always like to bring anecdotal information to (some) discussions that are unresolved. some people on that discussion might like the information.
