Can't even give Nixon China. It was more gamesmanship by Nixon. If any Dem had tried to reach out to China Nixon would have called him a commie.

So, ONLY, Nixon could go.

When you win re-election by either 48 or 49 of the 50 states you can't be doing too bad of a job.

I think it's true more or less that domestic politics forced his hand on some of those "good" issues--still he signed the bills that got us there.

On VN once has to remember he inherited the war and was trying to walk the line between the necessity of leaving and not giving in to the "Communist Menace"---after all he was a Republican and had to kowtow to the Right to a certain extent. The divisions in his administration's approach over it reflected the divisions in the country as well.

Nixon was a very pragmatic politician and knew what worked. He just had that fatal flaw about his "enemies"
--paranoia almost, that lead to his downfall. But for that he'd be held in fairly high regard today.
