The reason is because I remember very clearly that at the time, if a Democrat had tried to go to China Nixon would have called them a commie. NIxon was rising to power during red baiting, the John birch society and Mccarthy's House of Unamerican Activities.

In those days the right wing called liberals pinko's and commies.
