Yamaichi failure like atomic bomb - industry chief

OSAKA, Japan, Nov 22 (Reuters) - A possible shutdown of operations at Yamaichi Securities Co
Ltd (8602.T) would have a substantial impact on the securities industry and Japanese business in
general, Goro Tatsumi, Osaka regional chief of the Japan Securities Dealers' Association (JSDA)
said on Saturday.

''It's like an atomic bomb. There would be a considerable impact on the securities industry as well
as the nation's business as a whole,'' Tatsumi, also president of second-tier brokerage Kosei
Securities Co Ltd (8617.T), told Reuters.

The suspected existence of massive off-balance sheet liabilities at Yamaichi exceeding 200 billion
yen, revealed by the Finance Ministry earlier on Saturday, would lead to a drop in the credibility of
Japan's securities industry and thus have an impact on the stock market as well, he said.

''This would also strengthen the position of foreign brokerages here, which are taking the lead in
terms of their ability to develop new products and manage funds,'' he added.

He added that it would become difficult for brokerages affiliated with Yamaichi to survive, since they
had been too dependent on Yamaichi, although there was still some chance for them to obtain
external support.
