imposing something like this is not the proper role of government.

For you and me it isn't. For them, it is a critical role.

is still held by many people

Some would call that progress. In any progress, at what point to you cease to support the old ways. At some point manufacturers quite producing parts for outdated products. At what point was there no one coming down the street with ice. It was surely before every single person had a refrigerator. There's always a cut off and that cut off occurs before everyone is ready for it. If you're pushing progress, you try to accelerate the cut off if you can get away with it. Eventually the protest dies out.

If someone goes around saying wearing a tinfoil hat because he thinks the government is trying to control his brain with beams from satellites, it would still be wrong for me to grab him and take his hat away.

Sure, but would it be wrong of you to not give him a platform if it were inconvenient to do so? Not so much.
