I think the optics would be positive for cultural and religious conservatives, and mildly positive for libertarians.

As a non-religious libertarian, I see cultural and religious conservatives as inherently non-libertarian. Cultural and religious conservatives would impose their will on others just as surely as Obama and company are doing so, perhaps more so, if they had the might. I don't see any advantage to my side in a win for cultural and religious conservatives. Chipping away a tad at government imposition is a meager prize in comparison with the risks.
