I'm not sure about that, but it is very hard to detach yourself from your own desires and even self sacrifice can be self serving. We always find ourselves in the equation, but this is a good tenet.

Primum non nocere is a Latin phrase that means "First, do no harm". The phrase is sometimes recorded as primum nil nocere.

As Ayn Rand pointed out. It's taken me a lifetime to finally realize and accept that pursuit of my own self-interest should be, is, and has been, an OK thing that I am comfortable with. I see no reason why it should be considered inconsistent with charity in the broader sense, love for others, or living life by the Golden Rule.
