I see no reason why it should be considered inconsistent with charity in the broader sense, love for others, or living life by the Golden Rule.

Of course not! If you want to live in a cave and contemplate your navel while eating grubs, that's your pursuit of your own happiness. Just don't be surprised if I don't worship you as a guru. If you run into the street to save a baby's life while risking your own or getting killed, that is your selfish action. Giving money to charity, etc, are all pursuits of your own happiness and selfish. The only problem with the golden rule is when you run into a busybody who thinks interfering with your life is following the golden rule. Politics is full of busybodies.
