Sir Richard has all the seedy connections that he uses to collect dirt on people so he can sell his newspapers. I think he paid someone else to kill her - to get even with Anna, who he can blame for his breakup with Lady Mary. He wanted to marry into an aristocratic family and Lady Mary broke up with his because she found out he tried to pay Anna to spy on her.

Where did it come out that Thomas is gay? I must have missed that part.
