Personally, I wouldn't be shocked if iPhone 5 doesn't come out until 2013. LTE networks are only available in handful of markets in the US right now. It doesn't make any sense to sell the iPhone 5 before the LTE networks cover the majority of US markets. Plus, it gives wireless carriers more time to recoup the costs of their iPhone 4S handsets.

I would think otherwise for the following reasons:

- I have read somewhere (possible just a rumor) that Apple has solved the LTE always searching for a network problem thereby sucking the life out of the battery. Basically, what I remember is that the phone would check for LTE and switch off if not available and go to 3G. They could likely do this with software so there wouldn't be extra cost (except for the LTE chip itself). So, you would have the best of both worlds.

- Having LTE would get them additional carriers internationally (and maybe T-mobile here as well).

- The 4S with Siri would still be available for those not wanting to pony up for the 5.

- There were plenty of rumors previously that Apple was working on the 4S and the 5 at the same time with completely different teams. The 5 was probably just not ready for prime time. Another year and all should be well.

- Last year everyone delayed buying phones waiting for the new one which was "late" by all expectations. The expectations this year are for June or so. I expect they will be ready to go.

Nokia and Samsung are each selling north of 70 million cell phones per quarter. The main difference between Nokia or Samsung vs Apple is that Apple only has contracts with 30% of the global wireless companies.

The main difference is that Nokia and Samsung have average selling prices about a fifth of Apple's ASP's. The market for $600 handsets is substantial but it isnt anywhere near as large as the 1.6 billion unit cellphone market.

LTE is a done deal. It is the only way that Qualcomm's guidance of 1/3 of their chips being LTE enabled by the end of 2012 makes any sense.
