It appears that your theories are correct. Per Barron's our market already had the news that Yamaichi was going to close their doors, and it was perceived as good news! They liked it because this will force Japan to clean up their act. I suppose they were looking to the future.

To quote from the article: "Friday's reaction to this news (Yamaichi closing) was positive in the U.S. The December futures contract on the 225-share Nikkei index of Tokyo stocks initially fell 3.41% on the CBOE but closed only 1.79% down."

That reporter from the Yahoo news thread was putting quite a negative spin on that closing news.
