Kenneth was not accurate. The Muslim faith prohibits paying or receiving interest. Mortgages do exist but are structured differently. Lending institutions for example will purchase a building or home that one wants and then rent or sell that building or home to the party at a higher price (in lieu of interest...(g)) and therefore enable people to own their own home as others do in the world. You may borrow or lend, you may not pay or charge interest...so you complete the transaction within those guidelines.
