We had a great experience this year. Both from US and Canada. Last year we were detained for about 3 hours as they did background checks, searched the vehicle and RV, etc. (I have our business name on our truck and we're a bit young for snowbirds so last year they decided to put us through the ringer) This year, right on through both times.

I would advise anyone that has trouble at the border to get a Nexus card. You go through a rigorous background check, your family is even looked at. Once done, you'll have to trip more than a few danger signs for them to give you a second look. I plan on getting one for next year. It makes our trip easier and it makes their jobs easier.

Well, there you have it. Now we know what they look for. Smithee was on his motorsickle and wearing leather, you were a fallen woman traveling across state lines for immoral purposes - and carrying seeds at that.

LOL. Sorry MD et al, this is definitely a tangent but reading your post fired a couple of long dormant synapses.
This is pretty close to true but most of my 1982 brain cell have long since passed away.

It was 1982 and I was driving from San Diego to Denver with my future and current bride in an old Dodge Dart that grew up in Cleveland and was a definite beater. Due to serious rust I had duct tape holding the hood down so the road wind wouldn't blow it off.

This was somewhere that had little traffic and the roads were straight, Utah I think. She was sitting next to me with my arm around her shoulder which in this car meant no seat belt. I think there were only two sets. We were practicing tire blow out drills where if something happened she would duck down, I would whip my right hand to the steering wheel and she would assume crash position. That is a difficult situation to pay attention to speed.

I got pulled over for speeding and the officer was understandably interested in why I was driving a car with a Colorado plate, California insurance and an Ohio drivers license. Or maybe it was a California registration, Colorado insurance and an Ohio drivers licence. Anyway it was some combination that involved all three states.

He was very nice and after I showed him my leave papers he told me to slow down and sent us on our way. We were married shortly after on my in-laws back deck by a local judge just before I had to report back to SD.

<she asked us all sorts of personal questions (like what are YOU doing with someone from different STATE? really????) >

The difference in experience could be that I have been on a motorcycle the last couple times I crossed the border. The Canadian customs folks seem to have the idea that all Americans who ride motorcycles carry guns.

Back in the 70s, my experience was more like yours - getting back into the States was a major hassle. I recall crossing one time at a crossing near Bangor, Maine (I'd been up in the Maritime Provinces). There was a couple there who had been on a honeymoon. Customs found a pill on the floor of the car. I recall the agent saying something along the lines of: "We will put your car up on a lift and take off pretty much everything we can take off to complete the search."
