Here's why deregulation was essential:

Airline bankruptcies. If you go back further, you'll find even more. It is an unsustainable business model with or without government regulation. One more casualty of union labor.

The deregulation was one of the best political decision in recent decades in the US. Before deregulation if the airlines wanted to change where they flew or how much they charged, they had to get permission from the government. It lead to a very inflexible and very expensive airline industry and most people rarely took flights because they where two expensive.

As for bankruptcies.

1 - Companies that are unprofitably going under is a feature of capitalism not a bug.
2 - As Inode pointed out bankruptcies also happened before deregulation.
