What would you rather the government do with the surplus deducted from all our checks?

One problem with putting it in treasuries is that it allows the govt to over spend with minimal pain. If, for example, it had been put in gold, SS truly would be well funded, and the govt would have had to be more honest about spending for the past 70 years.

Thinking ahead would be good but that's not what was done. We are running large deficits when we know that we have huge (probably unsustainable, perhaps so even if we were running surpluses now) expenses coming up for entitlement spending. Shifting the money between different government accounts doesn't get us ready for future government spending. Lower debt, and a habit of controlling spending increases would have done so.

No, No, No, Don't switch the topic, please, and most especially so with false information.

What happened to the 'separate account' topic?

Let's get through that one, then I'll come back and we'll correct your assumption there is a surplus anywhere in SS - with facts, not dreamed up partisan twisty-turney talking points and strawmen.

OK?
