Sure you can do that, and some people do. But in my mind, why not spend the extra $200? It's such a small amount compared to the amount you would spend over the life of a 2 year contract. Might as well get a phone you are comfortable with. Most people willing to commit to data plans for 2 years are not going to be scared away from an extra $100 up front (iPhone 4 is $100, not free). All of these products are targetted towards the high end of the market.
