Ramsey, exactly. I couldn't have said it better. We have no idea how earnings will be.

But our p/e argument was more about how p/e should react to a situation like this.

Now get back to the QCOM thread!!!

Your scenarios are not mutually exclusive.

Clearly some of these factors are largely independent of each other. Demand can shift independently of Asian producers supply actions, which are independent of capacity/production adjustments by domestic producers going forward, etc. The scenarios merely isolate each relevant factor and its natural consequences.

In summary, the DD sector has a lot more questions than answers at this time. Short term, my guess is that we are heading down before up.

That's a cop out. <g> Given enough research an enterprising invester should be able to ferret out enough details to get a grip on the true situation. Come on, in one breath you say you have more questions than answers, then you proffer a forecast of market movement? Help us to get more hard info to nail down what's really going on, instead of waving your hands.

You raise a good point regarding reliability of company guidance for the quarter. Given back end loaded quarters, their own visibility must be obscured. If I were management I would set a target I thought I could meet or beat, so the 20-30 cent range is probably conservative. I wouldn't be surprised to see WDC come in -above- that range in Jan, particularly if they manage to capture market share in the enterprise segment. That's my basis for ruling out red ink this quarter.
