The principles of how to organize a society which would be healthy, happy and affluent are very simple

The philosopher John Rawls postulated a hypothetical "veil of ignorance" which we could use to hypothesize what a person would choose as the best and most "fair" organization of society. In his concept, the framers behind a veil of ignorance would want to maximize their rewards while balancing that against minimizing their burdens, since they wouldn't know if they would wind up on the bottom, middle or top of the social ladder.

That's a liberal's way of looking at it - get as much "social benefits" as you can from others while minimizing your social responsibilities.
