In the decision, then-Chief Justice John Marshall wrote, “A law repugnant to the Constitution is void.”

And thank God for Justice Marshall, one of the brilliant men this nation was gifted with at the foundation. The counter-argument was that Congress alone should decide what is or is not constitutional when it drafts the law. Imagine how that would have turned out. The Republic would have been lost to tyranny two centuries ago.

The Supreme Court, when it is performing its constitutional function, is the people's last bastion against the tyranny of the majority in the elected branches.
