I've known a lot of Mormons too and in general, they are like grown up eagle scouts. Good, salt of the earth people. But, the left hates them for campaiging against gay marriage in CA. They even make musicals mocking them. But except for a recent short attack by Lawrence O'Donnell on MSNBC there's been no attacks on him for Mormonism so far. The Obama administration is openly taking on the Catholic church and on Santorum for being a conservative Catholic but nothing yet on Mormonism. People are lulled into thinking Romney is safe from demonization. Here is the kind of thing I expect ... in spades: Before the election (remember liberals have convinced people Palin thinks she can see Russia from her house and doesn't read newspapers): every American will know about the obscure footnote in history called the Mountain Meadows Massacre and think a Romney ancestor took part in it, everyone who thinks Palin can see Russia from her house will think Romney thinks dark-skinned people are cursed by God, most Jews in the US will think Romney has baptized their dead ancestors and thinks his church is the 'true Israel' while Jews are 'Gentiles', most Americans will have seen photoshopped pics of the Romney family in 'magic underwear' and think they wear it, most Americans will have seen interviews with his cousins in Mexico - if they can be depicted as kooks, at least, most Americans will think Mitt's father, born in Mexico, was an illegal alien and Mitt was an anchor baby. Americans will have heard Romney asked about all those things as well as: whether he supports his grandfather's turning traitor to the US over polygamy (it won't matter that Obama's father was a Muslim with more than one wife), whether he thinks the Presidency will help prepare him to be God of his own planet in the next life. and much much much more.
