I'm sure we do have addicts holding all kinds of jobs. I've known of several doctors who got in trouble getting addicted to drugs. But if it were legal, they wouldn't have gotten into trouble unless people found out or something bad happened and people found out. Point is we don't want that.

The lady you spoke of isn't working in her career ... basically because people found out. People could hire her if it didn't matter to them.

Courts often order people to attend drug/alcohol programs of one kind or another, but not rehab, which is a different thing that generally involves real treatment.

And its much more expensive. And harder work for the addict.

Inode, > I know you may find this shocking but not all drug addicts are unable to function in every day life.

Would you hire a known drug (or alcohol) addict to your CPA practice?

Would you let a surgeon operate on you if you knew he or she was a drug (or alcohol) addict?

Would you feel comfortable with the driver of an 18-wheeler tailgating you and being high on meth?

It's one thing to allow people to screw up their own lives. It's yet another thing to deny they're screwing up anyone else's lives.

" I know you may find this shocking but not all drug addicts are unable to function in every day life."

The vast majority of drug addicts function just fine, and everyone encounters them in everyday life. Not every drug addict pays for his habit by crime, the huge majority have jobs and earn money. Why would this be of any more concern than the person that drinks?
