It states in the IBM release that the first chips will be produced..

"The first chips are expected to be produced in late 1999."

They are simply testing X-ray and like CYMER has stated, DUV will be the technology of choice for many years to come. It looks like x-ray may be the next step after DUV sometime in 2001+. Talking about mass production etc.. (I'll find more articles (all current) later).

X-ray sounds nice but it's a totally new transition. It's one thing to go from a Mercury Bulb to laser, but to move into X-ray is quite a step. It's going to need to prove itself and gain exceptance. This is a MAJOR overhaul.

Betty, Two X-ray systems are not the same things as two X-ray fabs.

There's also growing X-ray activity in the U.S. Paul Castrucci, former IBM executive, confirmed that he is putting together two separate proposals to build production X-ray systems in California and in Burlington, Vt., for shared use by investor chip companies.

Betty, yes I've seen the posts. But you (and they) beg the two questions I posed. For your convenience I restate portion of your original post and my questions: You said: "X-ray lithography is ready now, and my sources say that a move is afoot to make it widely available in the US in the near future (1998)" My questions: <<If you can't reveal your sources, can you elaborate on what is meant by "widely available"? I understand that there are some XRL equipped steppers that are used to produce one-of-kind ICs used, for example, by researchers to get more funding for XRL development. Are you suggesting that we will see PRODUCTION ICs made from XRL that will COMPETE with DUV made ICs in 1998?>> Tulvio Tulvio
