But we can't force OK or whatever other states you're talking about to change their law. Now, you're asking me what I'd like to see. 1) I'd like to see a variation in state laws on drugs so that we could test which ideas work best. We wouldn't need to read misleading propaganda about some little country no one really knows much about. In HA, better yet, one of the Hawaiian islands, say, Maui, we could legalize everything ... marijuana smoke shops, crack and eightballs sold in convenience stores beside the FourLoco. I would choose Maui cause it's an island. If it's a disaster, it would only hurt a small part of the country. Other states could have variations in legal treatment. Over time, you'd think states would tend to move to the legal solutions that worked best. We already have 12 states that have decriminalized marijuana, we have those drug replacement programs you speak highly of some places, so we already do test ideas out in various states. Not as much as we could, but state laws tend to reflect public opinion ... that's public opinion of everyone, not just you or me. I believe there was a marijuana legalization prop in California and I was surprised it failed. If you can't pass flat out marijuana legalization there where can you? Maybe Oregon? OTOH you have medical marijuana there which effectively is disguised defacto legalization. Lesson, if you want marijuana legalized (like you do) push medical marijuana ... it sounds compassionate, (people think its about helping cancer patients, who could be against that?) then the same doctors who you seem to disapprove of for over-prescribing painkillers will over-prescribe marijuana. Voila. Course the high school kids will still have problems getting their marijuana cause their pesky parents control their 'medical' access. 2) Another thing I'd like to see is the legalization advocates be less strident and angry and emotional about this. You can't force your ideas on the country. State legislatures control what the laws are and the legislators generally are doing what they think the voters want them to. I'd also like them to stop misleading people about other obscure countries. In fact, hardly any countries have legal marijuana, much less anything else. A small handful have decriminalized marijuana like 12 of our states have ... so frankly, I don't think the US is out of the world's mainstream when it comes to drug policy. And misleading people about prohibition. If fact, during prohibition, alcohol was treated pretty much the same way decriminalized marijuana is treated in places its decriminalized. Frankly, the emotion some people show on this make me wonder if some of them aren't dealing with a craving they've been coerced by the law to give up. ------ There was a third thing I was thinking of adding, but it's skipped my mind. Oh well. Can't remember ... so instead, I'll go back to your post:Do you think a penalty of life in prison is appropriate for a 4th offense of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute? Or that in OK you can get life for manufacturing hashish? I have to wonder what is wrong with people that get a 4th offense in a state like that? Get out of the state or stop dealing, dummy! The state leg intends to stop you ... so stop or get out. It's not ignorance, dopers know the drug laws in their state better than anyone but drug lawyers. It's one of the things they talk about in jail when they're not talking about how high they're gonna get as soon as they get out. It's not like those tough drug laws are a surprise they spring on people after they get arrested. I guess I can't see them as innocent little victims and I don't share your outrage at their plight. Rather I think they're knowingly, willingly running a big risk. Hell, maybe they figure they're gonna raise as much hell as they can till they're stopped. Some people really do think like that. As stupid as it may seem. If you want to be outraged, be outraged at the people who knowingly choose to f*** themselves up that way. I can guarantee you that anyone with 3 possession with intent to distribute offenses, knows damn well he's looking at life. Which is easier? To get the OK legislature to stop being so tough on drugs or to tell OK dopers to get their ass to California where a doctor can give them a marijuana prescription for insomnia or bunions or something.?
