I have been biking actively for a decade now, and only "needed" a helmet once but that time it saved me several stitches in my head at a minimum, and maybe a concussion. I took a very soft fall when my front wheel got tangled in some old tram tracks, and my head did a nice soft thump off the pavement that would have been very painful without the helmet. This was a settled issue for me long, long ago. No desire to be an organ donor until much, much later in life.
