That's kind of how I see it too.

IMHO As "The Network" grows there will be any number of devices performing tasks from the very simple to the very complex. Many of these devices may not even resemble a computer at all. I think at some point the line between what is and isn't a computer is going to be completely blurred if not obliterated.

Yes but isn't it true that what the user is doing determines how much power ( or Java ) he needs?

Good point. Well, you and I both know Corel bit off more than it could chew the first go 'round. Don't you think the applications will come as the market for the NC grows? After the Corel experience it seems like smaller and more specific software applications might be the way to go. Yes? If a company is going to write the everything for everybody software "monster" it's probably not writing software for the NC.
