To me, the appeal is that in a pinch, you have a full PC. I probably spend 95% of my non-working computing time on my iPad (mobile smartphone usage ons separate ledger). For the remaining 5% of the time, I still need to own a real computer. Occasionally, I do need to run full desktop versions of Turbo Tax or Photoshop, etc. Now, whether x86 tablets will be powerful enough to replace my PC is another story, but I will say that my main PC is 1st Gen netbook running Windows 7, so the performance bar isn't very high :).

As for installing programs, neither my MacBook Air or my netbook have optical drives, but I've managed to make do with a $20 USB DVD burner.

For the life of me, I can't see why people think that having the ability to run, say, Office 95 on a tablet is going to matter to anyone.

The only reason is if you want to ditch your PCs completely, and you're attached at the hip to Excel (as I am). Im sitting comfortably on the couch with my iPad on my lap but at any moment I could get an emergency email and have to get up and fire up the PC and sit at mt desk for a half hour.

I want the "one ring to rule them all". I know, "tough luck".

Allen,

I really wanted to pull the trigger the day of the earnings and buy more, but the the dang pundits had me second guessing myself. Live and learn.

Going forward, my thoughts about Tim Cook and Apple brings to mind Queens and David Bowie's song "Under Pressure.". :). Still long and strong, but damn I should have bought more shares. It is so much harder when you get to retirement age (this year, early retirement). Maybe I should throw caution to the wind as I can always work as a greeter at some large discount store to put food on the table:)

Kurt

For the life of me, I can't see why people think that having the ability to run, say, Office 95 on a tablet is going to matter to anyone. It may run, but it was never designed for a touch interface, and it's going to suck big time on that platform.

for me Window Office is the one item that can make Ipad the default corporate tablet overnight and replace most if not all of the laptop. I was disappointed that Msft did not launch Office with Ipad 3 (rumored was that Apple already certified Office on Ipad). It is not that tablet users are heavy creator of the content using Office, it is the fact that they can be the major consumer of the content. e.g. spread sheet that show client how their product can be cheaper to use over time and over various scenario. An automated sales presentation that is done on power point. And with Office you also can give the on the go executive the ability to modify document or power point charts while they are waiting for the plane. From what I read, Iwork cannot handle some complicate Excel spreadsheet and it also has limitation on the document side as well..

What are they going to do, insert a CD? Has anybody addressed this issue yet?
I thought Window software are pretty much downloadable from the software house site already. It is not as well organized as an Apple store or even Android Play store (and Msft really has no control on any software distribution) but I have not use the CD player on my laptop for the last 3 years ..
