Tulvio - In regard to your question:

"Factories" is not really the right word. I'd say "facilities" is more like it. I think it IS possible that they will produce ICs in 1998 (probably closer to 1999) -- but on what scale, I don't know.

This comment in the article should be read carefully:

"There's also growing X-ray activity in the U.S. Paul Castrucci, former IBM executive, confirmed that he is putting together two separate proposals to build production X-ray systems in California and in Burlington, Vt., for shared use by investor chip companies."

The phrase "shared use by investor chip companies" is the key. It will depend on how this is developed.
